LOS ANGELES — Marvel Television’s “Wonder Man” flips the typical superhero narrative on its head, focusing not on global threats but the trials of navigating Hollywood.
The show’s cast and creators convened at the Television Academy for an Emmy “For Your Consideration” event, discussing how the series diverges from conventional superhero tales.
Sir Ben Kingsley reprises his role as Trevor Slattery and commended Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who portrays Simon Williams. This character is an aspiring actor trying to carve out a career in the industry while concealing his extraordinary abilities.
“The script is deeply grounded in authentic human interactions, which allowed the characters’ relationship to develop organically,” Kingsley shared with On The Red Carpet.
Plans for a second season are already underway, with both Kingsley and Abdul-Mateen II set to return.
Showrunner Andrew Guest expressed that the series’ journey to connect with audiences has made the long development process worthwhile.
“It’s been over four years since we all started working on it and we got shut down by the strikes and then it took a while for our show to come out on the air, so to have people like it and respond to it is really gratifying,” he said.
For X Mayo, what made “Wonder Man” resonate was that, beneath the superhero story, it was really about finding yourself.
“It’s about dreamers, people who are super nervous and constantly seen as the black sheep in their family,” she said.
All episodes of “Wonder Man” are streaming on Disney+.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Disney+ and this ABC station.
